George Bell talks about his career path at True Potential, explaining what he enjoys most about his role and how he has seized the opportunity to progress.

How did you get started in the industry?

It was whilst studying Economics at A level that I really became interested in financial markets. To enhance my knowledge, I enrolled on a Finance and Investment Management degree programme. This was a four-year course which encouraged students to spend one year in industry. This appealed to me as I knew it was a chance to complement my academic understanding with real life business scenarios. There was one name at the top of my list – True Potential. After several meetings with the Senior Partners I was invited to join the firm for 12-months working in various departments, at the time this was a new concept.

Impressed with my work ethic, I was asked to return post-graduation on the basis I achieved a 2:1. After spending time at True Potential I was determined to come back, so I pushed myself and earned a 1st class honours in all modules and was registered on the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence.

Tell us about your area of expertise?

I have recently progressed from the role of Fund Governance Officer to Investment Analyst.

Throughout my studies and time at True Potential I feel it is my analytical skills which have allowed me to operate successfully. In financial services there is no shortage of data and there is a skill in being able to use this information to build a factual picture of a situation, coming to a well-informed conclusion of what’s going on; be it in terms of a single asset, fund or the global economy.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy seeing the portfolios evolve each month.

I have the privilege of gaining a regular insight into the views of some of the largest investment houses in the world and I see how they are responding to an ever-changing environment. They all have different views which is great, it ensures we are maintaining the advanced diversification strategy.

What makes the company special?

The most popular answer here is the people! So, I’m not going to say that. I’m going to dig deeper and say opportunity, because it’s the opportunity which people give you that makes True Potential special. The ability to learn, to develop, to take ownership of tasks or projects and to make a difference. It’s fantastic to see people within the company passing additional qualifications and moving into roles of greater responsibility, all because of the opportunity they have been given.

What are the most important things to consider for first time investors?

Set a goal. Remember why you are investing, write it down and picture it. Look at your risk tolerance, set the journey time and keep engaged. Don’t let short term volatility distract you from your goal.

What are you most excited about in regard to the future of the company?

Growth of the company. The story so far has been staggering, we set our targets high and hit these through hard work and focus. The landscape of financial services is evolving, and we are well positioned to continue the path of growth and to deliver innovative solutions that are built for the future, and that of our clients.
